Are you looking for some unique and affordable options for flooring in your home? Or maybe you are doing a remodel and looking for creative new ideas? If so, carry on reading as I have found some great new ideas and products.
As far as flooring for the home goes, I think it’s safe to say we are all pretty much aware of our most basic options, which are typically hardwood, tile or carpeting. However, I have come up with a few other unique and viable options that I will share with you here.
Colorful Wood Tiles
My first option is Mirth Studio which was founded in 2014 by artist and designer, Sally Bennett. During Sally’s artistic career she actually hand painted the floors of her high end clients in New York. However when Sally began renovating her own home she desired a softer, warmer floor option as opposed to cold hard tile and she also desired colors and patterns that she simply could not find. Hence the creation of her trademarked artistically patterned wood flooring tiles.
These unique wood floor tiles come in a fabulous array of fun patterns and colors. Each tile is printed on real hardwood oak before being sealed and finished with a proprietary sealing process. Which Mirth states “is able to stand up to years of abuse and are more durable than any wood flooring product on the market.” So that’s good to know!
Do take a look at their designs here Mirth Studio Hardwood Tiles. There is a wide assortment of patterns that will inspire for a variety of styles. Such as modern, farmhouse, Moroccan, coastal and much more.
Most tiles are described as “low luster” finish and sized at “almost one square ft.” It does state that they are hand painted in their studio in Charleston, South Carolina U.S., so that’s nice, and they are completely non toxic to boot. I somewhat recently visited South Carolina and was so inspired by their decorating. Which showed a profound sense of color and fun vibes mixed with a sophisticated style.
Mirth Studio also carries a fun collection peel and stick floor decals (shown above) as well as wall tiles and wallcoverings that are definitely worth a look (see below).
The floor decals are printed on a durable vinyl with an extremely strong adhesive backing. Yet they are also removable making them an excellent choice for an apartment rental or for a temporary solution while working on a renovation or waiting for your budget to catch up to your desired flooring.
Floor Decals
I have found another similar option to this at Brewster Wallcoverings. They are typically known for their wallpaper selection. However, I recently found that they carry peel and stick floor decals as well. Mind you the patterns are not as fun and colorful as the Mirth Studio, but they are affordable and easy to use. So if you are on a budget, so it’s worth a look.
Wallpaper
Another option is to simply wallpaper over your linoleum. Medina Grillo from Grillo Designs shows us how to do this over at her blog. I can especially see this as something you might want to do if you were renting (as Medina was at the time) and you had especially unattractive laminate flooring, as some rentals do. Also, she states this is super easy to remove, so your landlord won’t get mad at you (though I can’t imagine why they would get mad about any improvements anyway). Follow along on her blog post for detailed instructions on how to do this for yourself.
For this project it’s good to note that I have seen quite a few new wallpaper designs come out that have a highly textured rustic board look to them in a wide variety of colors. And these range from regular weight wallpaper to much more heavy and durable. So you could get a really great farmhouse look floor for less. Another fun idea would be to go in a Moroccan direction.
I hope this inspired a creative idea or was helpful for your wished for house planning. Let me know if you’ve ever tried this or are thinking of trying this in the comments below. And don’t forget to subscribe for more practical ideas on creating your dream home.
