Would you like to put together a unique bespoke bedding style that is right for you and your partner? But are confused about exactly what style is right for you, or how to create the style you want?
In this post on couples decorating ideas for bedrooms we will explore a variety of bedding looks so that you can decide what sort of styling might be best for you. In addition I will give you tons of great bedding RESOURCES as well as discussing the best fabrics and eco friendly inserts. Plus tips on how best to create each style.
The Modern Bed
First up we have the “modern bed.” Here I am referring to a very simple and clean cut design with minimal fuss. This style of bed typically features a mattress which rests on slats or a platform and does not require a box spring. For some the term “modern” could mean a style that is current and contemporary. However, what I am referring to is a style reminiscent of mid century modern furnishings from the 1950s and 60s which is one of my favorite furniture eras. Modern furnishings and home decor were characterized by simplicity and functionality and this style works best in smaller or apartment size spaces.
A modern bed consists of a very simple clean look as shown above. It typically looks best with a less is more approach. Puffy duvet’s and comforters don’t quite fit the intention. Instead non voluminous blankets, spreads and wool duvet inserts are usually tucked in to showcase the furniture’s clean lines. Solid neutral colors are typical or you could embellish with fun and colorful bold primary colors befitting the era. Textured blankets could be added. Headboards either decorative or basic are traditionally low and non imposing, so pillows should be kept simple, neat and tidy.
You could try natural cotton, bamboo or wood fiber materials for sheets and blankets. As the overall effect for modern styling is tending to be somewhat natural. Good resources would be West Elm, Scandinavian Design and Room & Board, which all carry carry this furniture style. You might find some modern appropriate bedding from companies such as Coyuchi (for organic bedding) and The Citizenry as well as Crate & Barrel.
The Contemporary Bed
A contemporary bed is probably the easiest for men and women to agree on. There are plenty of styles out there that would suit both tastes. Patterns and colors usually have more of a matchy vibe so it’s a bit easier to put together. You can mix stripes, florals, patterns, and solids. Colorways are usually more on trend (or updated) such as soft grays, navy or peacock blues, mint, coral or taupe. Try cotton, bamboo, sateen or hemp bedding for a natural feel.
You could have an assortment of standard and euro pillows while mixing and matching of prints and patterns. And don’t be afraid to mix bedding from different sources. You can find some great floral and pattern options at Biscuit Home, habitat.co.uk, and Wayfair.

The Luxurious Bed
The luxurious bed style typically has a full assortment of thick fluffy pillows along with one or two plush duvets (one can be folded at the foot of the bed). Soft or satin silk feel sheets with extra soft blankets.
You can mix and match patterns, materials, textures and colors. But I find that most luxurious bedding looks stick with solid colors with minimal textures. You might just want to introduce some elegant patterns in a few of the pillows. Keep the color palette subdued nothing to bright.
The luxury is in the plush effect and the richness of the materials such as jacquard, damask, velvet and silk. For sheets check out the Legna line, these wonderful sheets are made from wood fiber so they are easier to care for than actual silk sheets but feel just as lux. Also you can find beautiful linens at The Linen Society and Fine Linens. This versatile Crinkle Velvet from West Elm is a great choice for contemporary, modern or luxurious and comes in a variety of colors.
And of course, you will likely not sleep with all of these pillows on the bed, this is just for looks.
For an ecclectic bohemian style of bedding check out Sundance Home, Anthropology, Target (Opal House Line) currently Opal House is featuring the super fun designs of Jungalow designer Justina Blakeney.
Sheets & Fabrics
Let’s talk a little bit about fabrics and thread count when it comes to sheets. Right off the bat I will just say that thread count does not matter at all if the actual thread in question is of poor quality. Which is likely the case in most bedding that you will find at your typical big box and in some department stores. This is not to say that they do not carry any quality bedding at all, however, you will want to be mindful and check out where it is made, as well as look at other information provided. For example the Misto Lino bedding line is hand made in Italy as well as the fabric being directly woven from their own factory.
Tip: Thread count does not matter if the actual thread in question is of poor quality
Currently I am seeing astronomical thread counts in the area of 1,000 to 2,000. Which personally I would beware of as this is completely unnecessary. A 300 to 400 count is normal and perfectly adequate for a nice good quality combed or Egyptian cotton material. You can tell a lot by simply feeling of the fabric and giving it a close up, critical eye. Boll and Branch has some lovely, high quality sheets and duvet sets as well as KOTN with 100% Egyptian cotton sheets.
The highest-quality, softest sheets use cotton with extra-long fibers called long-staple fibers. Certified long-staple cotton includes Egyptian, Pima, and Supima. Other fabrics to try are tencel (a type of rayon similar to viscose and modal, made from wood pulp), bamboo, satin, silk and sateen (which is cotton made with a satin weave for a satin like effect).
Duvets & Inserts
I should say that, as far as bedding goes, I am much more partial to a duvet cover than I am to a regular all in one comforter. Comforters may be fine for kids or college students, however I do think that as adults we should move on to duvets. Most comforters are not washable or laundry friendly while duvet covers and the majority of inserts can be washed. Which is nice for those of us who like cleanliness and since it is where you will be spending half your life… need I say more.
As far as filler for pillows and duvets I personally prefer eco and vegan friendly. Currently some very good options for fill alternatives are bamboo and wool. Wool is a very eco friendly and sustainable material as well as being both warm and breathable. Bamboo is hypoallergenic, breathable and dust mite free which is nice. You can find bamboo duvet inserts and pillows at West Elm and wool inserts at Misto Lino. Also hemp is another option which is all natural but said to be more breathable thus providing a cooler sleeping experience. You can find some nice hemp options at Crate & Barrel.
For white duvet covers such as shown in these images you can find a nice assortment here.
