Are you in the midst of decorating with your partner and trying to mesh styles? You may be wondering if things are coming together or looking like a big hot mess. Creating decorating flow in your home is actually much easier than it seems.
I have a Stylist trick that will help you out with this dilemma. As a visual stylist for retail home furnishings I was typically working with one large space and the displays could sometimes end up looking choppy or disjointed.
So my strategy was to make sure one consistent color was present in each display. This helped to create a visual flow that your eye could follow around the room.
It’s the same thing for interior design. You want your eye to flow through the room or rooms. This is especially helpful in open space living plans. In the above image you can see how shades of teal start in the open living area with the pillows, then your eye is drawn upwards with teal in the artwork.
In these images most of the decor is along the lines of a similar style, this being a bit contemporary with a dash of urban modern. However, this technique can also work equally well for meshing styles that are a little less compatible. Helping the two styles to blend together. Which makes this a good trick to use in couples decorating.
Even the bedroom and bathrooms are sporting this deep color of teal. Creating what is called in the design world “the red thread” which is the common color that you can find in each and every room. Giving some consistency to the design.
A simple list of decor items that will easily work for this decorating tactic are candles, pillows, throw blankets, vases, and artwork. Which could be modern, abstract, landscape, or glamorous, as long as it has the chosen color.
Notice how there’s definitely a bit of whimsy incorporated into each room. And usually the teal colored items are the lighthearted, whimsical part of the decor.
And there you have it. A designer’s secret tip that couples can easily incorporate into their own homes to draw the eye and create a common theme.
Don’t you fancy that image of a dog blowing a bubble? Well, here is something very similar on Etsy. It’s just the right combination of whimsical and sophisticated. You can find it at Ron Schmidt Art For Dog Lovers.
