Are you and your partner decorating a new or current home together for the first time? And have found that you both have your own preferences regarding the look and style of your dining area? And therefore can’t quite figure out how to move forward.
Well, if that’s the case let’s take a look at how newly decorating couples can easily mix & match chair and dining table styles to create a look you can both love.
Just remember that meshing of two interior design styles doesn’t have to be messy or disjointed. Never before have we had so many different design styles offering you unlimited freedom with the ability to mix and match decor pieces while still creating a cohesive design.
Following I am sharing 8 dining room examples illustrating how you can mix a variety of different styles and still look stylish.
Hint: Make sure to pay particular attention to the chandeliers in the following images as this can be a unique stand out piece which can create contrast and a major focal point.
Rustic Traditional Contemporary
The above image combines a rustic wood table with simple lines along with some traditional dining chairs at the head of the table. This is paired with a more relaxed style of chair reminiscent of the mid century modern style. The look of this room is neither overly feminine or masculine and casts a nice balance between rustic contemporary and sophisticated.
Contemporary Transitional
This dining set has a contemporary soft look. Note the rounded edges of the table and chairs make it a bit more feminine. Yet the rug is a bit bolder and sets of the neutral colored dining set while also connecting it to other darker colors in the room. This look could be made a little more masculine with some darker tabletop accessories.
Hint: You might choose to change out the side chairs with a lighter wood look (similar to the first image) and keep the upholstered chairs on the end to lighten the room up a bit.
Urban Modern Bold Contemporary
By contrast the above look is a more Sophisticated Urban Modern Contemporary style. This features a large round table which is a departure from the rectangular shapes we see more of. The round shapes are reflected in the artwork and the lighting. This is definitely a darker more masculine look which could be toned down by lighter paint colors and artwork.
Hint: Darker woods look better with darker or richer paint colors. Light to medium woods tend to look good with white or lighter colors.
Rustic Farmhouse Contemporary
Now we move to a fun rustic but classic farmhouse contemporary look. Featuring a whitewashed block style wood table mixed with black shaker style chairs. Also the lighting is unexpected element of rustic canvas material which adds to the character to the room.
Hint: This whole look could also easily work with a mixture of different styles of chairs found at flea markets or garage sales and painted black. This is a more eco friendly sustainable way of decorating and I believe you should always try to creatively re use something first if you can.
Rustic European Country
The above is a sophisticated European French country farmhouse style, featuring a classic dark wood table paired with traditional dining chairs. The faux brick wall and studs on the chairs give it a more rustic look, and a contemporary chandelier keeps it from being too formal. This look could be lightened up with some different chairs and lighter artwork. Or a crystal chandelier could make it look more feminine.
Urban Contemporary Transitional
The above is a very basic style of dining table paired with transitional style upholstered seating. In truth any type of seating could be mixed with this table. However, since this is an open space dining area you will want to make sure that the look flows with the rest of the living space. Such as in this image you will notice that the lighting is a unique focal point and pulls the rooms together.
Traditional Rustic
An urban rustic dining table is paired with some traditional or classic upholstered side chairs. The artwork and chandelier is more contemporary. Again you could use the upholstered chairs on the end and switch out the side chairs for rattan or modern. This table would also lend itself to the Rustic Vogue look. By adding in some more feminine details such as feminine velvet side chairs and a crystal chandelier.
Fun Urban Modern
Here the fun fish artwork provides the focal point and turns this into a lighthearted dining area. Notice how the artwork picks up the colors of the table and chairs bringing the look together. The lighting is very contemporary. Rattan or wicker type of chairs would work well with this also.
From these examples I hope that you can see that you can very easily mix & match all sorts of styles to create the look you want.
Did any of these dining rooms appeal to you and your partner. Compare notes on what you liked and didn’t like. Pay attention to colors. Keep in mind that as a rule dark woods tend to be more traditional, urban, classic and lighter woods are more light, playful, rustic and casual.
